Airwave sits next to a keyboard and watches the space above it with infrared cameras. The ROLI Vision system follows all 27 joints in each hand at 90 frames per second, and the movements are translated into expression data that can shape sounds while the keys are played. It is built to complement ROLI Piano, Piano M and Seaboard instruments, but it also works with other MIDI keyboards after a short calibration procedure.
The unit comes with the Airwave Player plug-in, which runs in most DAWs and includes presets made by sound designers, together with 3D visuals that respond to hand movement. Airwave is also described as the core hardware of a wider Spatial AI platform for learning and creating music, which links it with other ROLI instruments.
It connects over USB-C using class-compliant MIDI and audio, so no special driver is needed for those functions. There is a 3.5mm headphone output, a 3.5mm pedal input with a 6.3mm dongle, two USB-C ports for data and power, and a magnetic USB port for compatible ROLI hardware. Power comes from a 65W USB-C PD supply. Mac use needs Apple Silicon with macOS 13 or newer; Windows needs Windows 11 on an AVX2-capable Intel or AMD processor.
