The S9 is a small mirrorless body built around a 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor of about 24.2 effective megapixels and an L-mount. It combines phase-detection and contrast autofocus with subject detection for people, animals, cars and motorcycles, and a 5-axis body stabilizer that can work together with lens stabilization.
Its main creative tools are Real Time LUT, which applies colour presets in the camera, and Open Gate recording, which uses the whole sensor so a single take can be cropped to several social media aspect ratios. Crop Zoom and Hybrid Zoom extend the reach of a single lens for both stills and video. Several compact kits are offered with 18-40mm, 28-200mm, 40mm F2 and 20mm F2.5 lenses, or as a body only, in a range of body colours.
For connectivity the camera has dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0. Files go to a smartphone through the LUMIX Lab app, which also provides additional LUTs. Video is recorded as MOV or MP4 in H.264 or H.265.
