The H390 combines a dual-mono power amplifier with a digital-to-analogue converter and network player in a single chassis. The amplifier stage uses Hegel's SoundEngine 2 error-cancelling design, which compares input and output and feeds a reverse-phase correction back in. The DAC is described as bit perfect, leaving the signal unaltered whatever the input, and uses clocks that follow the sampling frequency of the music.
For streaming it supports Apple AirPlay and UPnP, with Spotify Connect, IP Control and Control4 listed as free updates. It handles most audio formats, including DSD and MQA. Every input can be set as a fixed-level input that bypasses the volume control, which allows use in a home theater or with a Bluesound or Sonos.
Connections include one balanced XLR and two RCA analogue inputs, several digital inputs (coaxial, optical, USB, network) and fixed and variable line outputs. Startup volume and maximum volume can be set, and the software is upgradable. The model won the EISA High-End Amplifier award for 2019-2020.
