The DUO-CAPTURE EX is a 2-in/2-out USB audio interface built into a small metal case. Its two digitally controlled preamps use the same grade of components as those in the maker's V-STUDIO 700 and M-400 digital mixers. Each combo XLR/TRS input has its own phantom power switch for condenser microphones, and input 1 supports high impedance so an electric guitar or bass can be plugged in directly.
The unit can be powered in three ways: from the computer's USB bus, from three AA batteries, or from an optional AC adapter. When running on USB power, the supply is regenerated internally to keep the voltage steady. Weighing 460 g without batteries, it is designed to travel in a backpack. Battery life is roughly 1.5 to 6 hours depending on battery type and whether phantom power is on.
It connects to Windows (WDM/ASIO) and Mac (Core Audio) computers over USB, and to an iPad through Apple's Camera Connection Kit, in which case battery or AC power is needed. Balanced 1/4-inch outputs and a stereo headphone jack handle monitoring, while 5-pin DIN MIDI in and out let it work as a USB-MIDI interface, including with iOS apps.
