McBoost

The McBoost sits between a passive microphone and its preamp, raising the mic's output so that any preamp can work with it as though it were a high-gain ribbon mic pre. It uses a Class-A dual-transistor J-FET circuit intended to add gain without adding noticeable noise or distortion, and it helps drive long cable runs while reducing susceptibility to outside interference.

A three-position impedance selector lets the user tailor the response of the connected microphone, and a variable gain control adjusts the amount of boost. Typical uses include raising the level of a vintage ribbon mic in the studio, bringing out more detail from a standard dynamic mic on stage, and driving a mic signal over long distances in field broadcast work.

The unit connects in-line with standard XLR cables and takes its power from 48V phantom power supplied by the preamp, mixer or interface. No separate power supply is mentioned.
