The U 87 Anniversary Set packages the U 87 Ai large-diaphragm condenser microphone with an elastic suspension and an exclusively designed PS 87 pop screen in a styled retro case. The microphone, shock mount and pop screen combine polished nickel parts with the traditional matte nickel finish. The set also contains a dust cover embroidered with the anniversary logo, a pair of white gloves, and a signed, framed certificate of authenticity carrying an individual serial number.
The dual-diaphragm capsule offers omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-8 patterns, chosen with a switch below the headgrille. At the rear, a 10 dB attenuation switch raises the maximum handled level to 127 dB SPL, and a second switch changes the low-cut cutoff to reduce low-frequency interference and offset proximity effect. The A-generation electronics changed only the circuitry, not the capsule, giving 10 dB higher sensitivity and a 3 dB better signal-to-noise ratio.
The microphone is a pressure gradient transducer powered by 48 V phantom supply and connects through an XLR 3 F matching connector. It is used as a main orchestral microphone, as a spot microphone on single instruments and widely on vocals and speech.
