Hizumitas

A relay-bypass distortion pedal made as a recreation of the Elk BM Sustainar used by Wata of Boris. It gives heavy, gritty distortion with a wide-range Tone control, aimed at guitarists after thick, sustained high-gain sounds.

  • Recreation of Wata's Elk BM Sustainar distortion
  • Controls: Volume, Sustain, Tone
  • Tone control shifts between treble grind and heavy bass
  • Relay-based true bypass; needs power to pass signal
  • 9 V DC, 2.1 mm negative center, 10 mA
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Descripción

The Hizumitas is a three-knob distortion pedal developed with Wata of the band Boris. It reproduces the sound of her Elk BM Sustainar, a Japanese variant of the Triangle-style BMP circuit, after the designers studied her original unit alongside several vintage BMP and Elk pedals.

Volume sets output level, Sustain sets the amount of distortion and sustain, and Tone shifts the balance between treble and bass rather than acting as a conventional treble roll-off. Turned counterclockwise, it moves from piercing highs to an aggressive midrange grind; turned clockwise, mids and highs recede and the low end comes forward. Output gain is high, with unity at roughly 9-10 o'clock.

The pedal uses relay-based true bypass, so it needs power to pass signal. It runs from a standard 9 V DC supply (2.1 mm, negative center) and draws 10 mA. It is built by hand in Akron, Ohio, and covered by a limited lifetime warranty.
