Descripción

The Cloudlifter CL-4 is a rack-style mic activator with four independent channels. Each channel sits between a microphone and a preamp and raises the signal by up to 25 dB before it reaches the preamp, so the preamp can run in a lower, quieter part of its gain range. It is aimed at low-output sources such as passive ribbon, dynamic and tube microphones.

The circuit uses Class-A discrete JFET gain stages with a direct signal path and an input load of 3 kOhm. It takes its power from the phantom supply of the preamp or interface and needs nothing else. It does not pass phantom power on to the microphone, which keeps passive ribbon microphones safe. Mics that need +48 V, such as condensers, require a separate phantom supply.

Besides microphones, the inputs accept the output of a passive DI box, a wireless receiver, or a battery-powered microphone such as a shotgun or electret. The unit has a steel chassis, is built by hand in Tucson, Arizona, and carries a limited lifetime warranty with registration.
