Cloud 44-A

The 44-A is a figure-8 ribbon microphone with active electronics. Built-in Cloudlifter circuitry raises output and keeps noise low, so a separate preamp is not needed to drive the ribbon. It runs on +48V phantom power and connects through a standard XLR output.

The ribbon element is hand-tuned, measures 1.8 microns thick and is corrugated with a proprietary technique intended to help it hold its shape at high sound pressure levels. A patented Voice/Music switch changes the proximity-effect behaviour, which helps with plosives and boomy low end when working close to the mic. The figure-8 pattern rejects sound from the sides.

The maker lists vocals, background vocals, guitar amplifiers, drums (overhead, Blumlein, mid-side or room), percussion, orchestral and brass or woodwind sources, plus one-mic streaming and broadcast use. The body has a 180-degree swivel mount and an internal shock mounting system. It is handmade in Tucson, Arizona, USA.
